Van Gerwen one of 3/10 trio to back in Players Championship

Published:

An odds-on winner being better than a 33/1 loser is one of the most useful bits of punting advice dished out in my direction at a young age and this wisdom is worth following as the Players Championship darts gets underway in the Butlins resort at Minehead.

There is £300,000 in the prize fund with Michael van Gerwen returning as the defending champion. In terms of odds-on betting, 3/10 will prove our lucky price on the opening day at the oche, with Mighty Mike one of three selections at these odds to fill our trousers.

Michael van Gerwen to beat Raymond van Barneveld @ 3/10

Van Gerwen has won all three meetings between these Dutch rivals since October 19th and Barney is truly in dreadful form at present.

Since the start of October, he lost to Prakash Jiwa in the first round in Coventry, Keegan Brown at the Grand Slam of Darts and Mark Dudbridge in Ireland.

The favourite looks a shoo-in here.

Robert Thornton to beat Darren Webster @ 3/10

Thornton is often reliable at progressing through the early rounds of tournaments and has won all five career meetings with Webster.

Incidentally, Webster has failed to get beyond the first round in any of the big tournaments this year either, including the World Championships, World Matchplay and World Grand Prix.

Michael Smith to beat Andy Smith @ 3/10

Two members of the Smith darting community face off and it is Michael that has dominated previously, leading the head-to-head record 6-0.

Strangely, in his last tournament, Andy lost in the opening round to Dennis Smith, which doesn’t seem a great omen to his chances.

A treble on our selection of 3/10 favourites all doing the business pays out at a decent 6/5 and this looks a good way to start the week in Minehead.
