Turkish giants to swoop for out of sorts Man Utd striker

Manchester United could be tempted to cash in on Robin van Persie amid interest from Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The Dutchman has underperformed for most of United’s lacklustre campaign thus far, prompting Ladbrokes News’ writer James Curtis to suggest his Old Trafford time could be up and Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier to claim the 31-year-old is “past his best”.

Representatives for the Superlig outfit have been told that a January move for the former Arsenal and Feyenoord player is out of the question but the Red Devils will surely be tempted to sell in the summer if the striker’s form does not improve.

Van Persie was the focal point if the Red Devils’ attack in his first season at the club, playing all 38 games in the Premier League and netting 26 goals to help the side claim the league title.

This followed on from a similarly spectacular final season at the Emirates, in which he bagged 30 goals from 38 games.

However, since his electric start at United the Dutchman has reverted to type with his on-field play punctuated with intermittent spells on the sidelines.

In fact the two season mentioned above are the only times Van Persie has contributed to a full league campaign since arriving in England, missing at least 10 games in the other eight seasons.

These injuries, and the fact Van Persie is no longer the main draw at United, have combined to leave the striker a shadow of his former self at present, with just three goals from his eight appearances so far this term

Commenting on Van Persie, Le Tissier told Sky Sports: “I am not sure he is not feeling uncomfortable at the amount of great talent that is around him.

“He always seemed to thrive when he was the main man. At the moment he is nowhere near that. He is not finding his form and maybe he might be at that point in his career where he has gone just past his best and he is on his way down a little bit.”

The Dutchman is a 25/1 shot to leave United in Januray but Louis van Gaal looks set to keep faith with his countryman, until the summer at least, in the hope he can rediscover some form and deliver a top four finish for United – a feat currently priced at 4/5.
