Spurs should try Arsenal target at RB before selling

Published:

When rumours broke of Arsenal’s reported interest in Vlad Chiriches, there were no doubt hordes of Tottenham Hotspur fans queueing up to drive the Romanian to their rivals.

Chiriches has not been seen in a Spurs shirt since giving away a last-minute penalty against Besiktas, and his frequently error-strewn displays have done nothing to endear him to the supporters this term.

Mauricio Pochettino apparently now holds a similarly dim view of the defender’s ability, but the Argentine should not move him on without giving him a try at right-back.

Chiriches’ main flaws are his over-confidence in possession and his lack of nous when it comes to his positioning, both of which would be less problematic at right-back.

The Romanian would have far more attacking license, and he has the pace needed to get back when caught up the pitch.

If he was able to translate his attacking instincts to the flank, it could also solve a current problem with Spurs’ setup.

Pochettino needs his full-backs to roam forward regularly to make up for the lack of width provided by the inverted wingers he favours, but Eric Dier and Kyle Naughton have both struggled with this.

With Kyle Walker out injured, Chiriches could be the next best option in an attacking sense at right-back.

If the defender flops on the flank as he has done so far in the middle, then Spurs might be wise to move him on to their rivals, especially if they can somehow turn a profit on the 24-year-old.

The Lilywhites’ first game after the international break is away at Hull in the Premier League, a match they are 23/20 to win.
