Portugal v Argentina: Ronaldo to shine in defeat on Old Trafford return

Published:

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will both run out at Old Trafford this week but not in a way that will have Manchester United fans feeling more optimistic about their season.

Portugal take on Argentina at the Theatre of Dreams in an international friendly and while CR7 will look to shine on his old stomping ground La Albiceleste look most likely to secure a win.

Gerardo Martino’s side go into the tie as 17/20 favourites, with Portugal priced at 31/10 and the draw available at 11/5, but here James Curtis looks at a trio of markets offering far better value

Argentina to win and both teams to score @ 31/10

Portugal come into this game on the back of two wins but recent defeats to the like France and Albania hint at weakness in Fernando Santos’ side.

Ronaldo and co. may have lost just two of their last eight friendlies but that record looks set to be tarnished against an Argentina side that has lost just once in 12 friendly fixtures and comes into the game with three wins from their last four outings.

However, with Ronaldo on the pitch, having scored in three consecutive international games, Portugal will fancy their chances of getting on the scoreboard.

Argentina 2-1 Portugal @ 7/1

If you’re looking for bigger returns, then the correct score market looks the way to go.

With Argentina boasting recent friendly wins over Germany and Croatia they are unlikely to take their foot off the gas for this one and with CR7 always a threat a repeat of the 2-1 result in the only other friendly meeting between the two could be the way to go.

Half-time/Full-time – Argentina/Argentina @ 2/1

With Argentina unattractively priced for the straightforward win it could pay to take the longer odds in them to be winning at 45 and 90 minutes.

Portugal have led at the break just once in their last four games, while the South Americans have been in front at half-time in four of their last six.
