Poll: Arsene Wenger – Should he stay or should he go?

There is no fan base in world football that’s quite as divided as Arsenal’s. 

The perfect reminder of that fact came after the Gunners’ capitulation at the hands of Swansea left them 12 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea with supporters totally split on whether Arsene Wenger’s time at the helm of the Emirates Stadium outfit, who are 40/1 to win the league with Ladbrokes, should come to an end.

The case for staying…

The most successful manager in Arsenal’s history has not become a bad manager overnight. The Frenchman, who led Arsenal through the 2003/2004 season unbeaten, has led the north London club to 18 consecutive seasons in the Champions League on a limited budget.

Despite going eight long years without a trophy, Wenger finally ended the club’s trophy drought last season by winning the FA Cup and as history has proved, if anyone can turn around the club’s fortunes it is Wenger.

He is the man who brought Alexis Sanchez to the club and while it’s been the Gunners’ second worst start to a Premier League season, injuries have obviously played their part.

Be careful what you wish for Arsenal fans! You only have to look at Old Trafford to see what losing a long-standing great manager can do to a club.

It seems like we have been here before and when the doubters start circling around the French boss he works his magic and the Gunners end up in the top four, and last year they lift a cup! Who’s to say that can’t happen again?

The case against…

Tactically the Gunners have been poor so far this season. Pundits and fans alike have been critical of Arsenal’s tactics and it appears Wenger is just not learning from his mistakes.

Last Tuesday, with Arsenal 3-2 up against Anderlecht five forward players were caught ahead of the ball leaving the defence exposed ahead of the equalising goal. Yesterday, with the Gunners leading 1-0 eight players were out of position ahead of the ball which lead to the Swansea equaliser. This sort of stuff is not rocket science.

More unforgivable is the fact Nacho Monreal is still playing centre-back at the heart of the Arsenal defence. The Spaniard is just not a central defender and

Wenger’s inability to see that and the fact he sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona and chose not replace him is gross-mismanagement.

Fans will also point to the fact the Frenchman failed to sign a defensive midfielder during the transfer window and with the ageing duo of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini as his only options in that position they have a very valid point.

But where does this end? The same mistakes continue to happen on and off the field and it’s only Wenger who fails address the problems football fans the world over can see.

It’s groundhog day for Arsenal and their fans once again with many seeing the only way forward without their legendary manager!
