Newcastle could be in line for post-Christmas Carroll

Published:

The 25-year-old is only just returning to action for West Ham, after tearing ankle ligaments during a pre-season tour of New Zealand a few months back.

But despite the Irons splashing out £15m to land the former Liverpool striker, Carroll could find it difficult to win back a place Sam Allardyce’s starting line-up with summer recruits Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho forging an effective partnership already this term.

That situation could pave the way for a move away from Upton Park, with Newcastle persistently linked with a move for the forward who scored 33 goals in 91 appearances for the Toon, prior to moving from St James’ Park to Anfield for £35m back in January 2011.

And a move to Newcastle would likely suit Carroll, who will be keen to build his match-fitness back up and force his way back into Roy Hodgson’s England plans in the coming months, having impressed for the Three Lions at Euro 2012.

Any deal could be welcomed by Alan Pardew too as the manager looks to build on the club’s recent upturn in form, while bolstering his current attacking options.

Ayoze Perez may have started to find some form in front of goal for the Toon in recent weeks, but the club are believed to still be on the lookout for a new striker, with the likes of Emmanuel Riviere and Facundo Ferreyra failing to cut the mustard in the Premier League.

And Carroll will have fuelled further speculation about his future after taking to his Instagram account to post a picture of the Magpies’ ground alongside the hashtag “Reminiscing”.

Whether the deal is a permanent one or merely a loan that contains the option to buy remains purely conjecture at this time, but his decision to take to social media and comment on his former club will have some Newcastle fans dreaming of a reunion.
