FIFA 15 favourite to top Christmas video game charts

Published:

Over the past decade the Christmas number one single has been dominated, almost exclusively, by either X Factor winners or charity songs.

In the video game equivalent, a similar duopoly exits between the FIFA franchise, made by EA Sports, and Activision’s Call of Duty series.

So it’s unsurprising to see the two latest offerings from each developer battle it out for this festive seasons’ crown.

Ladbrokes make FIFA 15 the 4/6 favourites to top the gaming charts come December 25, across all platforms, while Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare sits a stride behind in the race, at 2/1.

It was the popular football game that managed to get their nose in front of the shoot ’em up sim 12 months ago, as an 18 per cent rise in sales during the week before Christmas lifted it above Call of Duty: Ghosts.

However that was the first time the franchise had seen in the festive season on top of the pile since FIFA 09 took glory in 2008.

That year aside, Call of Duty had been given the ultimate game sales honour in each year since the release of Modern Warfare in 2007.

But while the betting would like you to believe this is a two-game race, the current charts indicate that other titles could provide a challenge.

FIFA 15 sits fourth in the list, which takes all sales up to November 15 into account, with Call of Duty in first spot.

Two recently released games separate the pair, with 10/1 Christmas chance Assasin’s Creed: Unity and 14/1 shot Halo: The Master Chief Collection sat in second and third respectively.

Another brand-spanking new offering, Grand Theft Auto V, can be backed at 10s, while Minecraft completes the top-six contenders at a price of 12/1.
