Everton set to pounce as Aston Villa star shuns new deal

Everton have entered the race to sign Fabian Delph and have been boosted by the player’s contract stance at Villa Park.

The Toffees will have a fight on their hands to land the star, however, as they are joined by local rivals Liverpool and Tottenham in the race to capture his signature.

An exclusive report in the Telegraph claims Delph has been offered a new four-year deal with wages of around £50,000 per week to commit his future to the Villans but the 24-year-old has baulked at the opportunity.

This has alerted clubs to his availability and with Delph available on a free transfer in the summer a scramble for his services is now expected to ensue.

Delph has impressed for the Midlands club of late, earning a senior call-up to Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions side and faring well in two European Championship qualifying victories so far.

Having signed from Leeds for £6m and suffered two serious knee injuries before his recent bloom Villa will be unhappy at the prospect of losing him on a free and this could see Everton and their rivals test the waters in January.

The player is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury and his absence from the team – likely to last way into December – could help facilitate a winter move.

Having spent big on Romelu Lukaku in the summer, Everton are once again in the market for bargain additions to their squad and whether it’s a cut-price January move or a summer Bosman signing Delph certainly fits the bill.

The Toffees are next in action away at Sunderland and after impressing in a 3-0 Europa league demolition of Lille, the visitors look good value for the win even at the short price of 21/20.

The Black Cats can be backed at 13/5, while the draw is priced up at 5/2.
