Cleverly v Bellew II: 3 of the best bets for the undercard

| 22.11.2014

While we are all looking forward to the main event on tomorrow’s blockbuster card there is still the small matter of a packed undercard featuring some of the best stars in British boxing.

With the likes of Anthony Joshua, James DeGale, George Groves, Jamie McDonald, Scott Quigg and Callum Smith all set for fight night Oliver Yew has picked out three of the best bets for the undercard action.

Anthony Joshua v Michael Sprott – Joshua to win in round 2 @ 5/2

Only once has Anthony Joshua been taken further than two rounds in his nine fight professional career to date and that was against German Konstantin Airich.

In five other of his contests he has stopped his opponent in round two, including his two round demolition of Denis Bakhtov in October, and that round looks a good place to start as any for his contest with British veteran Michael Sprott.

When AJ fought in Liverpool back in July he was faced with another British journeyman in Matt Skelton and that night the 2012 Olympic gold medallist got the job done in our favoured round.

We are expecting much of the same from Sprott at the Echo Arena and he can evade the WBC International champion for a round at least.

But it won’t be long before Joshua catches up with the 40-year-old and when he does it is going to be all over – hopefully in round two!

George Groves v Denis Douglin – Groves win rounds 1-3 @ 11/5

With Saint George already in the mandatory position for the WBC super-middleweight world title this is not expected to provide much of a test for the former world title challenger.

Groves has already revealed he looking to get Douglin, who has three defeats on his record with two coming by KO, out of there as quickly as possible and with that in mind the 11/5 on a Groves win inside three rounds looks tempting.

If you think the Londoner will finish his American opponent of even quicker then don’t forget our gone in 60 seconds market. Groves is 25/1 to beat Douglin within the first minute of the contest.

Callum Smith v Nikola Sjekloca – Fight to be won in rounds 7-12 @ 2/1

Liverpool prospect Smith is handed his toughest test to date against Montenegro fighter Sjekloca in what is an eliminator for the WBC world title.

Smith, who has devastating knockout power, has 11 KOs on his 14-fight record but that will be put to the test by a man who has taken current WBO champion Arthur Abraham and former WBC champ Sakio Bika the full distance and never been stopped.

But Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher and promoter Eddie Hearn think the super-middleweight star is a special talent and are already lining up a shot at George Groves, who is mandatory challenger for the WBC belt.

Who are we to question their judgement and we are backing Smith to wear down Sjekloca with his pounding body shots and hand him a first stoppage, with the fight being won in rounds 7-12.
