Celtic v Salzburg: Austria’s finest to assert Group D authority

Published:

Celtic face Group D leaders Salzburg on matchday five of the Europa League and following a below-par performance which saw them scrape a win at home to Dundee, the Bhoys may struggle without ineligible top scorer John Guidetti.

These sides drew 2-2 in the reverse fixture, though it’s the Austrians who have forged a two-point gap at the summit of Group D and the visitors to Parkhead have been banging in the goals too.

We back them to catch Celtic off guard as part of our top tips for BT Sport’s live Thursday night broadcast:

Salzburg to beat Celtic @ 7/5

The fact the Scottish Premiership leaders are narrow 7/4 outsiders to win on their own patch shows what tricky customers they face, and we tend to agree with the odds.

Having matched each other in Austria there will not be a great deal in this. But the fact Salzburg’s ferocious goal scoring in this competition is coupled with Celtic’s greatest threat sitting it out, may well prove the difference.

No other team has amassed more than Die Roten Bullen’s 13 in the group stages, where they’ve won both continental away assignments before this trip, stuffing Dinamo Zagreb 5-1 last time.

Jonathan Soriano to score and Salzburg to win @ 12/5

Wins for Salzburg and goals for their ultra-prolific Spaniard go together like fairgrounds and candyfloss.

This bet would have landed in 10 of 19 appearances for 22-goal Soriano in 2014/15.

Both teams to score @ 4/9

As was the case in a goal-filled encounter at the Red Bull Arena, this Salzburg side’s gung-ho approach often sees them succumb to at least one goal at the other end.

Considering Celtic haven’t been kept at bay for eight matches and Salzburg have kept one clean sheet in 15, this looks a banker bet on the tie.
