Asteras Tripolis v Tottenham: Spurs face frustrating night

Published:

Despite repeatedly disappointing at weekends, Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed their midweek excursions in the Capital One Cup and Europa League so far this season.

That’s at least partly down to the doubts over which players are the best available to Mauricio Pochettino, with the likes of Harry Kane and Benjamin Stambouli thus far mostly confined to weekday outings despite impressive form.

After thrashing Asteras Tripolis 5-1 at White Hart Lane, many might expect a similarly easy night in Greece, but as you’ll see from our best bets, the hosts are worth backing to claim at least a point.

Spurs are 3/4 favourites to win the match, with Asteras priced at 7/2 and the draw 11/4.

Asteras Tripolis and Draw Double Chance @ 20/21

The Greek side are yet to taste defeat on home soil in all competitions so far this season, with the likes of Mainz, Partizan Belgrade and most recently Olympiakos unable to beat them in Tripoli.

In fact their loss at Spurs is their only defeat anywhere in their past nine matches, and even that game was not as one-sided as the scoreline suggests.

Furthermore, the Lilywhites’ last-gasp win over Aston Villa at the weekend was their first away victory in five attempts.

Under 2.5 goals @ 20/21

Five of Spurs’ last seven away games in the Europa League have seen two strikes or fewer, and none of their past seven group games on the road have gone over 2.5 goals, a run that stretches back to 2011.

Meanwhile, Asteras fans have rarely seen a glut of goals at home, with four of their past five competitive games in Tripoli in all competitions seeing at most two goals.

Harry Kane to score at any time @ 6/5

The youngster is surely set for a first Premier League start of the season at the weekend after coming off the bench to net the winner at Villa, but it’s highly likely Pochettino will also use him in Greece as well.

Kane has been in unstoppable form in Europe this term, bagging six times in five games including the Europa play-off

The striker scored three times in the win over Asteras in London. Even if Spurs don’t collect three points in Greece, Kane will likely get himself on the scoresheet again.
