Arsenal may pursue Destro to relieve Sanchez’s scoring load

The chances of Arsenal recruiting further goal-scoring talent to support the efforts of Alexis Sanchez have received a boost, following Roma striker Mattia Destro’s latest hints.

The Italian international, 23, has compiled 22 goals in 49 games for the Serie A club and recently responded in a positive manner to rumours linking him with Arsenal.

“Arsenal for me? The rumours are good, I’m happy for them. This is the proof that I’m doing my work well,” Destro told the Italian press.

Frustratingly for Arsenal fans, their £16m signing Danny Welbeck, keeps banging them in for his country, but has only been able to find the net twice for the Gunners in the league since joining in the summer from Manchester United.

Injuries to previous regular goal contributors such as Theo Walcott, who has just returned, and Olivier Giroud, who is out until Christmas, have clearly compounded Arsenal’s woes.

The Londoners’ poor start to the season sees them marooned in sixth after 11 games, a full 12 points behind Chelsea and given just a 40/1 chance of winning the Premier League by Ladbrokes.

And if it wasn’t for the immediate goal-scoring impact of their dazzling new Chilean forward, the picture could look even worse, as Sanchez has contributed eight of the Gunners 19 top-flight goals.

Destro’s four Serie A strikes during the early stages of the current campaign have helped propel the Giallorossi to second place in the table behind Juventus.

Although his numbers are not yet prolific, he’s widely tipped as one of the Azzurri’s most promising players for the future.

Arsene Wenger’s decision to invest in young French centre-forward Yaya Sanogo looks to have backfired pretty spectacularly, as the former Auxerre player is yet to score a senior goal in nearly 18 months at the club.
