Arsenal facing top-flight opposition for two attacking targets

Published:

Yep, it’s that frustrating part of the day again where, as an Arsenal fans scan the news hoping to see transfer links to players in problematic positions, only to realise yet more attacking talent is being lined up.

It seems abundantly clear to everyone bar Arsene Wenger that a centre-back and a defensive midfielder are of an urgent need when the January transfer window opens, but the Frenchman looks certain to remain oblivious to that fact in the face of these two transfer targets.

The latest lines on the wire suggest the Gunners are actively pursuing Barcelona’s Pedro and young German star Julian Draxler, although a Premier League rival stands in between the north London club and each player.

Liverpool are the men to beat for out-of-favour Barcelona winger Pedro, who seems a misfit in new manager Luis Enrique’s playing style at the Camp Nou.

So anti-width is the former Blaugrana midfielder, that a bid of £25m would be enough to prise the Spanish international away from the La Liga giants.

Arsenal, who are 18/1 to win the Premier League this term, are no strangers to links with Schalke’s Draxler, having supposedly been close to completing a deal for the forward in the summer only to renege on the agreement at the last minute.

A return to the Bundesliga for the 21-year-old’s services is on the cards, though Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United are also keen on securing a deal for the player.

A £35m asking price for Draxler is thought to be the reason known-miser Wenger baulked at the deal last time around, although the rumoured Red Devil interest could be enough to get the Frenchman reaching for his wallet now.
