Probably the most speculative of our efforts this week, especially considering he hasn’t beaten a horse home in the UK all season, but bear with us…
All the four-year-olds runs this season have come on rattling ground, which clearly hasn’t suited the horse, but when you look back on his form last year, it’s easy to make a case for him on the rain softened ground at Newbury.
Fifth in last year’s Arc and twice a winner on heavy ground, he will relish the test up Newbury’s long straight and is worth an each-way interest in an extremely open contest.
Our sole jumps fancy this week, and Alan King’s six-year-old could continue his upward curve having ended the last campaign winning the Manifesto Novices Chase over course and distance at the Grand National meeting after coming second at the Cheltenham Festival.
He goes well fresh, as demonstrated when he won first time out last season and will be primed to strike on a course he likes.
His handicap mark looks fair with others looking either a tad high in the weights or finished last campaign in questionable style. He will be tough to beat.
With plenty out of sorts in this field, we cannot see this one outside of the first three now he’s stepped back up in trip.
You can put a line through his last two runnings with the bare mile probably being too short for him these days.
A runner-up at Redcar off 1lb higher and a respectable fourth place finish in a decent Sandown handicap off 2lbs more mean that it won’t take much improvement to be involved here.
The soft ground shouldn’t be a problem, and he could cause a mini surprise in Berkshire.
