Spurs striker impressing all but his boss as Southampton lurk
Published:As the two most prominent young strikers in the country, Harry Kane and Saido Berahino could be partnering each other up front in various stems of the national team for a fair chunk of their careers.
As part of Gareth Southgate’s impressive England U21s, the pair have developed a deadly partnership that has seen goals shared relatively equally between them.
A step into the senior team’s breaches doesn’t seem too far out of reach for either, but there’s no question it will be West Brom’s Burundi-born sparkplug that gets the call first. Not because his ability is superior to Kane’s but because his club manager trusts him more.
Berahino has started nine games for Alan Irvine in the Premier League, scoring seven goals to go with the 10 he’s bagged for Southgate.
Compare that to the hour Kane has been exposed to in the top-flight this term and it’s easy to see why Roy Hodgson may plump for Berahino over the Walthamstow lad in future squads.
Despite Spurs’ flagrant struggles under Mauricio Pochettino, which has seen the north Londoners fall to 13/2 for the top four, the Argentine is yet to give his young goal-getter a chance, clearly ranking the four goals in three games Kane has notched in the Europa League below the perpetual floundering of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado.
Kane is the recent recipient of a five-year contract at White Hart Lane, but he could be tempted to break ties with his boyhood club in order to find the regular top-flight football that can push him towards national honours.
Enter Southampton, who are rumoured to be lining up a £10m bid for the 21-year-old this January.
It’s quite easy to picture Daniel Levy’s joyous features as he jumps at the chance to make so much on a fringe player developed in-house and Spurs would have the answer to their striking woes pulled from under them.
Unless, of course, Pochettino starts picking him.
