Southampton youngster the latest to join England’s new era

If you’re a young English footballer in the Premier League at the moment, you’d have to fancy your chances of getting a crack at the international whip in the near future, as Roy Hodgson continues to treat his squad selections like a trial system.

Having given Fabian Delph, Calum Chambers and Danny Rose a taste of the action for the last round of European Championship qualifiers, the former Liverpool manager has now added Nathaniel Clyne to his growing list of young call-ups.

The Southampton full-back, who looks guaranteed to start the first of the double-headers against San Marino as the only natural right-back, has made eight appearances for the U21 side but never graduated to full honours so far.

After Delph’s positive showing against Switzerland last time out though, the roaming midfielder will likely have to settle for a spot on the bench as the Aston Villa hassler joins Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere in the trio that secured a 2-0 win at St Jakob Park.

Hodgson faces San Marino light up front, with only Rickie Lambert, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck fit enough to receive their call-ups.

The injury to Daniel Sturridge hasn’t diminished Ladbrokes’ odds on the Three Lions, though, who are whopping 1/100 favourites to prevail, with Arsenal’s Champions League hat-trick hero Welbeck 3/1 to repeat the feat in the Liverpool man’s absence.

After hosting international football’s tiniest minnows, England travel to Estonia for an equally untesting outing.
