Side with Halep to upset Williams once more in Singapore

The WTA Tour Finals are down to two and we’re tipping up underdog Simona Halep to inflict another defeat on Serena Williams in the space of a week.

As the 2014 season takes its bow at the Singapore Sports Hub we’ve run the rule over the form and stats to offer three more carefully considered bets for the grand finale.

Simona Halep to beat Serena Williams @ 13/8

If ever there was a signal that the guard maybe changing in women’s tennis, then 23-year-old Halep destroying 33-year-old Williams 6-0, 6-2 in the round robin stages is it.

Not since 1998, had Serena been beaten so comprehensively and although the American regained her composure in true champions style to make yet another season-concluding showpiece, the semi-finals offered more clues that this could well be Halep’s biggest win to date.

While the inspired Romanian made equally light work of Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-2, Williams had to escape the jaws of defeat, coming back from 4-1 down in the final set tiebreak against Caroline Wozniacki during a gruelling match.

Halep’s game is based on pure aggression and she’s shown in three mesmerising displays in Singapore that even someone as powerful and athletic as Williams will struggle to cope with the French Open finalist in this form.

To win the first set and win the match: Halep @ 9/4

Only Anna Ivanovic has defeated Halep at the Tour Finals and in that match winning the first-set tiebreak proved pivotal to the victory.

However, Halep has got her nose in front in all of her other three matches and gone on to win in straight sets.

Second set total games: Under 9.5 @ 8/11

All four of Halep’s matches in Singapore have seen her claim the second set in the match and in impressive style too, 6-3, 6-2,6-3, 6-2 en-route to the final.
