Rooney to be record breaker before Euro 2016 qualifying ends

England’s free-kick saviour in an otherwise forgettable trip to Estonia on Sunday, Wayne Rooney is fast approaching the all-time goalscoring record for the Three Lions and Ladbrokes customers would be wise to cash-in now while they have the chance.

The bookmaker is currently offering Evens on Wazza usurping Sir Bobby Charlton as the Three Lions’ most prolific marksmen before we reach Euro 2016, as part of the ongoing Breaking Bets series.

And given the calibre of teams the national side are facing in the next few months it’d be silly to look this proverbial gift horse in the mouth.

Having scored against Estonia and San Marino in qualifying already, the 28-year-old is fast becoming England’s answer to Portugal’s former all-time top-scorer Pedro Pauleta – a player who often failed to shine in the big games but never stopped scoring against the international games’ lesser lights.

Pauleta managed a hefty 47 goals in 88 games for the other Selecao, though that tally included hauls such as a four-goal flourish against Kuwait, two braces against Luxembourg and a hat-trick against Cape Verde.

A quick look at the England fixture list suggests Rooney could be in line for similar, though perhaps not quite so prolific, returns against the likes of Slovenia, Lithuania and old foes San Marino.

While the Three Lions only managed five goals when they met San Marino at Wembley earlier this month, history suggests they could have more luck in front of goal on the road against the European minnows, having won 7-0 and 8-0 on their last two trips to the region.

Friendly internationals against Scotland and the Republic of Ireland could also present the perfect opportunity for Rooney to break the record, with the England striker no doubt keen to score against either one of the home nations, having drawn a blank in previous encounters.

With three wins from three England look well on their way to Euro 2016, while with two goals in three games, the Manchester United man looks well on his way to being the national team’s best – back him now.
