Premier League Half-Term Reports: Not good for Newcastle

Published:

Team Name: Newcastle United

Current Premier League position: 18th

Giddy highs: With no wins on the board so far this season, there are few in the way of giddy highs to pick out for the Toon this term.

However the moment exciting youngster Rolando Aarons rose to head home his first Premier League goal at St James’ Park against Crystal Palace probably takes the prize, though the winger has failed to hit those heights again this term.

Crushing lows: Despite the disastrous nature of Newcastle’s start to the season the reality is that the Magpies have only suffered one notably disastrous day at the office – the 4-0 loss away to Southampton that got the ball rolling, once again, on all of the “Pardew Out” stuff at the club.

Shining Star: Papiss Cisse

Few players particularly stand out in this category but one man who has made a real difference despite being far from 100% fit is Papiss Cisse.

The Senegal striker scored just twice in the Premier League last term but is already on double that amount of goals in the top-flight this term, having scored point-rescuing braces against Hull and Swansea so far.

Biggest Disappointment: Facundo Ferreyra

It would be easy to single out defenders like Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson for their sub-par performances, as well as Remy Cabella but arguably the biggest flop at the club so far has yet to even play a minute for the first-team in the Premier League.

Signed after scoring six goals in 13 games for Shakhtar Donestsk, rumours coming out of the club suggest the Argentine is far from being up for the fight. A lack of fitness and a poor attitude in training has seen Ferreyra labelled a flop already and his Newcastle career could be over before it began.

Best bet for the rest of the season: Newcastle top North East club @ 12/5

Grade: D-

Final Thoughts: Despite dismal start to the campaign, Newcastle United have shown signs of life in recent weeks with draws against the likes of Hull and Swansea. If Papiss Cisse can get back to full fitness and Remy Cabella can find his feet then a first win of the season should follow.

With so few points separating teams in the lower half of the table, a decent run of results could see Newcastle surge up the standings – they just need that win now!
