Newcastle one of three clubs Defoe could rescue this winter

Published:

In four short games the MLS will have concluded for the season and Jermain Defoe will be without competitive football for a good while.

Across the pond, many a shrewd manager will eye the opportunity to bring a 55-cap England international to their club – either permanently or on loan in January – as a golden one.

Below we’ve picked out the three sides who would best utilise the Beckton boy’s services:

QPR – 4/6 for relegation

Only one club has scored less goals than the men from Loftus Road this term. While a large amount of that could be attributed to their 4-5-1 system, the fact Harry Redknapp’s men struggled for goals in the Championship as well indicates that the personnel can cop some flack too.

Clearly a fan of Defoe’s, Redknapp has worked with him at West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham and there’s likely to be few names higher up the wobbly-faced manager’s shopping list.

Stoke – 3/10 for a bottom-half finish

The Hoops manager won’t be the only one that’s eyeing a reunion with the diminutive striker.

When at Portsmouth, Potters bean pole Peter Crouch formed an incisive partnership with Defoe and the chance to partner the two together again must surely cross Mark Hughes’ mind as he ponders how to improve his side’s fortunes in front of goal.

Stoke have scored just six times from their seven Premier League outings.

Newcastle – 16/5 for the drop

Papiss Cisse may be firing for Alan Pardew, but there aren’t too many others endearing themselves to the Magpies’ manager.

The St James’ Park mob’s problem is that they can’t finish their dinner, scoring at a rate of one-goal-a-game but taking 14.3 shots per contest too.

There are few around who have a better finishing record than Defoe and he wouldn’t leave much of a financial dent.
