Murray’s march to the O2: 4 Shanghai Masters upsets to back

Published:

While the likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are due on the courts of Shanghai this Wednesday, without Andy Murray in action we’re opted to pick out four potential upsets from a series of encounters offering less-than-tempting odds.

Best backed as singles or, if you are ambitious, a fourfold accumulator available at a whopping 55/1, here are four upsets to look out for on Sky Sports 3.

Gilles Simon to beat Stanislas Wawrinka @ 13/8

Simon escaped a minor scare against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the last round but he could be the one to dish out a shock in Shanghai against the reigning Australian Open champion.

Wawrinka has a poor record against the Frenchman on hard court surfaces winning their last two meetings, including a victory back in January of this year, and could come undone again here.

Martin Klizan to beat David Ferrer @ 2/1

Tomas Berdych may have ended his hopes of success in Beijing last week, but the Slovakian showed what he can do in the right conditions with a 2-1 win over Rafael Nadal.

David Ferrer, meanwhile, comes into this off the back of losses to low-ranking pair Marcel Granollers-Pujol and Victor Troicki.

Richard Gasquet to beat Tomas Berdych @ 13/8

The Czech world no.7 may have been boosted by reaching the final in Beijing but his record against Richard Gasquet suggests the Frenchman should be confident of victory, having seen off Berdych in straight sets in three of their last four meetings, including earlier this year in the Davis Cup.

Steve Johnson to beat John Isner @ 7/4

This all-American encounter could go the way of the outsider here, with Johnson beating Isner in their only previous meeting in Washington earlier this year.

With the tall man of tennis dropping sets to veteran Tommy Robredo and even Pablo Andujar last time out, another upset looks likely.
