Kamara: Overlooking Redfearn for Leeds post was a surprise
Published:Things have rarely been plain sailing at Leeds United in recent years with the Whites’ decision to overlook club stalwart Neil Redfearn for the relatively unknown Darko Milanic another intriguing twist in the tale of the Elland Road club.
One man who was certainly surprised that academy coach Redfearn was cast aside by maverick chairman Massimo Cellino is Ladbrokes ambassador Chris Kamara.
Speaking exclusively to our news team, Kammy said:
“I was surprised that Neil Redfearn was not given the chance to manage Leeds given the success he enjoyed in recent weeks. After all, Massimo Cellino already gave the job to Dave Hockaday, who was also a rookie, and someone who had been sacked by Forest Green Rovers.”
The former Leeds hero added: “Redfearn has good credentials in the game, particularly at Barnsley as a player and he has the club at heart, having worked with the youth team for a long time. He came in and did a great job and has suddenly been replaced by someone I’ve never heard of.”
Redfearn oversaw a four-match unbeaten run in caretaker charge and while never certain of assuming a permanent role, looked to have done more than enough to impress the main man in charge.
Instead, 46-year-old Slovenian Milanic was brought in from Sturm Graz with his first game in charge resulting in a 2-1 defeat at Brentford, followed up by a midweek 0-0 draw against Reading.
But while there are perhaps question marks surrounding the new boss, Kamara admits that it’s the chairman’s prerogative to pick and choose who he wants to take the club forward.
He added: “The chairman has the right to make these decisions. At the end of the day, he (Cellino) will be criticised for the bad ones and praised for the good ones – Cellino is just trying to be successful.”
Leeds are 7/4 to beat Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday in Saturday afternoon’ lunchtime kick-off in the Championship, with the draw priced at 23/10 and the Owls a 6/4 shot for victory with Ladbrokes.
