Hipster Tipster: Goalfests in La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga
There comes a point in every Europhile tipster’s life when you have to turn your back on the ones you love in favour of something daring and new.
Like switching from one brand of organic oat bran to another more ethically-sourced alternative, it can be a gut-wrenching experience but something the truly brave amongst us must traverse in our ongoing quest for excellence.
For me that time has come with the decision to ditch Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paris Saint-Germain from my weekly tips, following one too many draws and a frankly unconvincing 1-0 win over Apoel Nicosia that nearly had me choking on my Tuesday night Tochitura until a last-gasp goal.
With that in mind, here are four games from Spain, Italy and Germany that promise plenty of goals but no Zlatan.
Like week-old paella Valencia looked more than a little fishy against Deportivo last week and thusly went down 3-0 but I am backing Los Che to star in a goalfest against Elche, who shipped five against Real Madrid this season. All five of Valencia’s wins this season have also featured over 2.5 goals.
Serie A’s basement pair meets in a game that promises little other than goals, goals and more goals. There have been over 2.5 goals in five of Parma’s last six games while Sassuolo held the Old Lady of Juventus to a 1-1 draw last week and will be confident of scoring against more spritely opponents.
These two both impressed with wins in the Champions League but could be a little tired going into this Bundesliga meeting, which means more goals. Three of Leverkusen’s last four games featured over 2.5 goals and with Schalke beating Sporting 4-3 on Tuesday, it may be a similar story here.
Myself and Giallorossi fans the world over may still be reeling from the midweek 7-1 mauling against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich but I’m convinced Roma can bounce back from that lesson from the Spanish stubbled one in a game with over 2.5 goals, having racked up a minimum of three of three of their last four in Serie A. Sampdoria, meanwhile, featured in a 2-2 last time out in the league.
