Gignac off? 4 possible destinations for French striker

Published:

Ligue 1 leaders Marseille have admitted it could be financially difficult for them to keep hold of star striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, putting the Premier League’s top clubs on red alert.

The France international has been in blistering form so far this season, scoring 10 goals in 11 matches to send L’OM to the summit of the French top flight.

But with the 28-year-old’s contract expiring at the end of the current campaign Marseille may be forced to cash in on the powerful frontman, leaving a host of English clubs battling it out for his signature.

Oliver Yew takes a look at four potential destinations for French striker should he want to make the move across the English Channel.

Arsenal @ 20/1 (To Be Gignac’s Next Club)

Arsene Wenger, who is a well-known admirer of the former Toulouse man, could finally be ready to make his move with the 28-year-old out of contract next summer.

Reports suggest the Gunners have already been in discussions with Gignac’s advisors over a potential January move but in true Wenger style, the north London club would be willing to wait and sign the in-form hotshot, who has made 19 appearances for France, on a free transfer.

Newcastle @ 10/1

If a French footballer comes on the market expect Newcastle United and manager Alain Pardeux to be at the front of the queue.

Since the delightful days of Pardew criticising Arsenal for their foreign policy the Toon boss has had a real change of heart and is now one of the biggest buyers of French products going.

And if top quality like Gignac becomes available and wants a move to the Premier League the Magpies will certainly emerge as candidates for his signature.

Tottenham @ 20/1

With both Roberto Soldado and Emanuel Adebayor struggling for goals, Mauricio Pochettino will be desperately trying to boost his strike options in January and nothing would please the Spurs faithful more than to pip their north London rivals to Gignac’s signature.

With only Harry Kane in any sort of goalscoring touch, it’s paramount a striker comes to White Hart Lane and the French international, who is Ligue 1’s top goalscorer, would fit the bill perfectly for the Lilywhites.

Liverpool @ 20/1

Could Gignac could be the answer to Brendan Rodgers’ Mario Balotelli nightmare?

So far the £16m Italian striker’s move to Anfield has not worked out and with speculation building as to how long the former Manchester City man may stay on Merseyside, Gignac could be the ideal replacement.
