Is Madrid’s Gareth set to Bale out Manchester United?

Published:

Manchester United have apparently set about bidding for one of Real Madrid’s superstar midfielders – and it’s not Cristiano Ronaldo.

While United and Ronaldo have been continually linked with a reunion since his departure for the Bernabéu it appears the Old Trafford club have now turned their attention to his team-mate Gareth Bale.

In one of the more imaginative rumours doing the rounds Spanish news outlet Medios Deportivos has claimed that United have given up chasing CR7 in favour of a £90m bid to bring the Welsh winger back to Britain.

United have been linked with Bale in the past, both during his time at Southampton and Tottenham, and the report suggests that Louis van Gaal will make the 25-year-old his top target this summer.

United are set to spend big in January but having already secured Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Ander Herrera the Old Trafford boss is expected to use his funds to strengthen the weak defence.

Bale is currently out injured at Madrid but has taken the move to La Liga in his stride, scoring 22 goals in 44 games in his debut season, including one in Real’s Champions League final win and helping to win La Decima.

The Welshman has netted five times already this season and Real will be unlikely to be looking to sell, but a bid of £90m and the chance to take over from Welsh wing legend Ryan Giggs could tug at the club’s purse strings and the player’s heartstrings in equal measure.

Adnan Januzaj is the current owner of Giggs’ famed number 11 shirt but the young Belgian has played only a limited amount of football this term.

The move for Bale would have to be filed under “very unlikely” at present but should United secure a return to the Champions League and if Bale is considering a return to these shores it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.
