Everton should pounce on Liverpool man’s contract conundrum

Time may well be drawing to a close on Glen Johnson’s Liverpool career as the right-back recently revealed that things have gone “very quiet” at Anfield over a new contract.

The club have offered the England international a one-year extension on his current terms, which was rejected as Johnson seeks a longer deal.

If an agreement cannot be reached the 30-year-old will become a free-agent this summer, which should the prick the ears of these three clubs in need of enforcement on the defensive flank:

Arsenal

The Gunners’ shortcomings at right-back have been highlighted by Mathieu Debuchy’s injury this season.

Calum Chambers is an able deputy but is earmarked as a regular centre-half in the future, while if Arsene Wenger had any faith in Carl Jenkinson, the boyhood Arsenal fan wouldn’t be out on loan at West Ham.

Everton

With Seamus Coleman injured, Roberto Martinez has had to rely on Tony Hibbert in the Irishman’s place this term.

Although an admirable professional, the 33-year-old doesn’t quite provide the same attacking tenacity as Coleman and Johnson would add quality to the options available to the Spaniard in that department.

Hull

Steve Bruce’s use of a three-man defence would play right into the former Chelsea man’s hands, allowing him to bomb forward with far more regularity.

Approaching his 31st birthday, Johnson will clearly look to secure first-team football if he were to leave Liverpool.

A move to the KC Stadium would provide the 54-cap international the best chance of that with only Ahmed Elmohamady standing in the way.

Johnson, who returned from injury in the recent West Brom win, is likely to resume playing duties after the international break, with the Reds 8/13 to beat QPR.
