Three clubs Glen Johnson could join after leaving Liverpool
It is fair to say there will not be too many tears shed at Liverpool when Glen Johnson’s contract expires this summer.
The right-back has turned in a series of increasingly desperate displays for the Reds, as a result making his club’s choice clear when it comes to the possibility of renewing his hefty contract.
However, Johnson has struggled with injuries of late, and at 30 he could still recapture his best form for a few seasons, making him a gamble worth considering for these three sides.
Mauricio Pochettino’s narrow attack means his full-backs provide nearly all of the width in his Spurs side, and while Danny Rose has done an unexpectedly decent job on the left, the right-back berth is a problem.
Kyle Walker’s mysterious injury problems have left only Eric Dier and Kyle Naughton, who both struggle to provide enough of an attacking outlet for the side.
Johnson has many flaws, but his forward play is undoubtedly his forte, and he could be an asset in Pochettino’s system.
The Giallorossi have formed a successful habit of picking up ageing full-backs from England in recent years, with Maicon and Ashley Cole installed on the flanks of their attack after leaving Manchester City and Chelsea respectively.
Maicon will be 34 by next season, meaning Roma could perhaps be tempted to snatch up the relatively spry Johnson for a free over the summer.
If Johnson continues to play as poorly as he has done of late, moves to the likes of Spurs and Roma could well be beyond him, but a late career renaissance at Loftus Road would remain on the cards.
Mauricio Isla’s loan spell has not been a runaway success thus far, so QPR could cut their losses on the Chilean in the summer and instead move for Johnson.
