Breaking Bets: Welbeck to fill his boots in Sturridge’s absence

Published:

Danny Welbeck will be asked to lead the line for England in the Three Lions’ European Championship double header this month after Daniel Sturridge was ruled out.

In what could become the first bitter club v country row of the season Brendan Rodgers has said that his star striker will not be fit enough to play for England even if he features for the Reds this weekend against West Brom.

Ruling his man out, Rodgers said: “Daniel won’t be fit. Whether he is available for the weekend or not, he won’t be fit.

“If you are talking about players’ availability, then they need to be fit to play and Daniel will not be fit to play.”

One man who won’t mind, however, is Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck who netted two goals for England last time out and will look to grab the opportunity with a hatful of goals against San Marino and Estonia.

And it is the first of these games that sees Welbeck star in the latest of Ladbrokes’ Breaking Bets series, with the former Manchester United hitman priced up at a tempting 11/4 to net a hat-trick against San Marino.

The minnows have long been the whipping boys of European football and while captain Wayne Rooney is likely to use the game to edge closer to becoming England’s all-time top scorer Welbeck can give Roy Hodgson a selection headache with a big tally of his own.

England last played San Marino in the 2012-13 season, winning 8-0 and 5-0, and the aggregate score from their four meetings so far reads England 26 – San Marino 1.

Welbeck has now hit 10 goals from 28 England appearances and is off the mark for Arsenal since swapping Old Trafford for the Emirates on transfer deadline day.

The striker bagged a brace against San Marino two years ago and at 11/4 is a great price to go one better this time around.
