Bookies hail tremendous Treve after back-to-back Arc wins

Published:

Treve may have bounced back to form yesterday to claim a second successive Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe success but the Queen of Longchamp didn’t harm the bookies too badly, according to Ladbrokes.

A run of disappointing results for the star filly in the build-up to this year’s Paris showpiece saw the defending champion returned at a double figure price and the bookies weren’t grumbling at all after a historic day in France

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “It wasn’t all that bad. We’d never before gone into any Group 1 race at 8/1 the field so we were always likely to see a tremendous spread of business and that came to pass.

“Turnover figures were great across all key channels, helped undoubtedly by the each-way terms.”

Taghrooda was backed all day and eventually went off as favourite but the John Gosden-trained filly could only finish third behind Flintshire and winner Treve.

But with plenty backing the British raider, who could head to the Breeders’ Cup turf next or retire to stud, each-way they were rewarded with Paul Hanagan helping her overcome a bad draw into a place.

“Taghrooda was an ugly result in the place book but it would be churlish to complain on such an historic day,” added Williams.

“We didn’t lose out by any stretch and it was a day of celebration.”

Elsewhere on an exciting day of racing in Paris, Ballydoyle’s filly Found is now the 5/1 joint favourite for next year’s 1000 Guineas after taking the Marcel Boussac in impressive style.

Her stablemate Gleneagles did not have the same luck after the Ballydoyle colt was placed third by the Longchamp stewards despite finishing first-past-the-post in the Jean-Luc Lagadere.

Gleneagles is still 14/1 for both the 2000 Guineas and Derby with Ladbrokes despite his efforts in Paris.
