Basel v Liverpool: Both teams look certain to score in Group B

Published:

Since Liverpool stumbled back through the door of the Champions League with a 2-1 win over Group B minnows Ludogorets, they’ve lost to West Ham, had to rely on penalties to knock Middlesbrough out the Capital One Cup and drawn with Everton.

For their second bout of European action, they travel to Swiss outfit Basel, a side who beat Chelsea both home and away in this competition last season and have something of a reputation for causing upsets.

How will the Reds fare? Well, our best bets for the game should tell you:

Both teams to score @ 3/5

Like last season, the hallmark of Liverpool’s 2014/15 campaign is their inability to shut teams out.

There’s only been one clean sheet in the Reds’ eight games, but their attacking nous has seen them amend for that leaky defence.

All bar two of those eight matches would have landed a punt on both teams scoring.

Basel are the Swiss Liverpool. They’ve kept a clean sheet just twice in 17 and have obliged BTTS backers nine times in 11 outings this season.

Shkelzen Gashi to score at anytime @ 10/3

Gashi is an attacking-midfielder in the Frank Lampard mould and earned himself a move to the Swiss giants with 20 all-competition goals for Grasshoppers last season.

He’s started life in Basel well, finding the back of the net five times in his 10 appearances to date and is a large price to beat Simon Mignolet at any point considering the Belgian’s form.

Liverpool to score 0 or 1 goal @ 17/20

The men from St Jakob Park may not keep many clean sheets, but they don’t get hammered at home in the Champions League either.

In their last 13 home games in the competition, the visiting side has only managed to score two or more goals twice, while Liverpool have scored one or less in four of their last five Champions League trips.
