Arsenal ready to make £32m bid for Manchester United target

Arsenal are preparing to go head-to-head with Manchester United in the race to sign Germany international Mats Hummels.

Louis Van Gaal is desperate to reinforce his faltering defence by bringing the Borussia Dortmund captain to Old Trafford but the Gunners are looking to jump to the head of the queue by making a £32m bid when the transfer window re-opens.

The 25-year-old was constantly linked with a move away from the Westfalenstadion over the summer, with United showing strong interest, but opted to stay with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

It is thought the defender is keen to stay in the Champions League and Arsenal are looking to take advantage of that fact by making a concrete offer for his services.

Arsene Wenger is keen to pair Hummels, who was part of the Germany side which lifted the World Cup in Brazil, with Laurent Koscielny as he looks to strengthen a squad which only has two centre-backs.

There is a heavy reliance on both Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at the heart of the Gunners defence and Wenger is now ready to splash the cash to address those issues as his side look to mount a title bid and add to last season’s FA Cup win.

The north London club, who are 20/1 to lift the Premier League trophy in May, are confident of landing the former Bayern Munich star after he suggested he could leave Dortmund for a team that plays attractive football.

Hummels has so far resisted the lure of the Premier League but after his comments Arsenal could fit the bill if he is in search of a new challenge.

He said: “If a club with a bigger reputation than Dortmund were to make a move, but I don’t like the way they play football, I wouldn’t even consider a move.

“At Dortmund, the style of play is exactly the way I want to play football.”

One thing is for sure – Arsenal, Wenger and Hummels sounds like a match made in football heaven!
