Arsenal and Man Utd target announces wish to play in England

After spending much of the summer starring in Premier League gossip columns, William Carvalho has fired up the rumour roundabout for another spin by saying he would like to play in England some day.

The 22-year-old, who has been linked with both Arsenal and Manchester United, said he wanted to one day play in the best leagues in the world, also referencing La Liga as a possible future destination.

Arsenal in particular would benefit from signing the powerful midfielder, as their title ambitions have already floundered partly due to a lack of resolve in the middle of the park.

The Gunners are now 20/1 to win the Premier League, while Man Utd, who opted for Daley Blind to improve their midfield over the summer, have seen their odds drop to 14/1 after winning two on the bounce.

Arsene Wenger decided against signing a defensive midfielder over the summer, a decision that has instantly looked questionable as his side have won just two of their first seven league games.

Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini both look well past their best, while pairing Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere in midfield has left the defence exposed with both players inclined to roam forward.

Carvalho, who was picked as the best breakthrough player in the Primeira Liga last season as he helped Sporting to second place, looks the perfect man to solve these issues.

The 6ft2in powerhouse is almost impossible to outmuscle, and he combines those raw physical attributes with an excellent reading of the game and an eerie amount of composure for one so young.

The Sporting player has a release clause of £37m, a huge price-tag for a 22-year-old yet to impress in one of Europe’s major five leagues.

However, if Arsenal are serious about challenging the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, this is one signing that could put them back in contention at a stroke.
