Arsenal leading the chase for “sad” Paris Saint-Germain striker
Published:Arsenal have once again been linked with a move for Edinson Cavani after former PSG star Jerome Alonzo revealed the Uruguayan striker was “sad” at the Parc des Princes.
It is reported the 27-year-old is frustrated at having to play second fiddle to Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the French capital club with the Gunners leading the chase for the former Napoli star.
Writing in French paper Le Parisien, Alonso believes the PSG fans are not seeing the best of Cavani anymore.
“We no longer recognize Cavani. He looks sad, his eyes no longer sparkle.
“With Cavani before, Paris can score a fourth goal late in the game. But his game is stereotyped.”
Wenger’s admiration for Cavani, who has scored four times for PSG so far this season, is no secret in the footballing world with Arsenal linked to a move for the player back in January 2013.
The north London club were once again linked with the player in the same summer but the former Palermo striker joined Les Parisiens for a fee thought to be in the region of £50m.
But with speculation surrounding Cavani’s future in Paris and recent comments from Wenger, the Uruguay international’s name is never far from being mentioned in the same breath as the Gunners.
“I love him as a player,” Wenger said on TF1.
“I love the Matador’s attitude on the field. But I think he’s playing a little with the brake pulled up.
“I think at PSG is he not able to give his best, perhaps because of the presence of Ibrahimovic,” the Frenchman added. “He is able to influence at all levels in a team and there is little room for an attacker around him.”
Liverpool and Manchester United have also expressed an interest in bringing Cavani to the Premier League but there’s no doubt Wenger would be at the head of the queue should the PSG forward want to leave the Ligue 1 champions.
But the Frenchman will be hoping Danny Welbeck can continue his goalscoring form for now with the Gunners facing Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
