New York Red Bulls lead way for QPR misfit Wright-Phillips

Published:

Deemed surplus to requirements by Queens Park Rangers, Shaun Wright-Phillips could be in line for a brotherly reunion at Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.

The midfielder’s sibling and former Manchester City academy teammate Bradley, is enjoying life Stateside, having scored 21 goals in 25 games for the New Jersey-based team so far this season.

Rs manager Harry Redknapp is keen to offload the winger, who is reportedly on a £60,000-a-week contract with the Loftus Road club and has so far failed to feature for the Londoners in the Premier League this season.

With a January move, Championship loan spell or move abroad in the offing, we look at three of the best options available to the former England midfielder.

Stoke City @ 16/1

The Potters were previously linked with a summer move for the 32-year-old and while they ultimately baulked at his wage demands, a January deal could yet come to fruition with Wright-Phillips enjoying a good relationship with Stoke manager Mark Hughes.

It was Hughes who recruited SWP for his second spell at Manchester City and should Stoke find themselves struggling at the wrong end of the table come Christmas, then a New Year move for the experienced attacker could be on the cards.

Nottingham Forest @ 8/1

Wright-Phillips may have turned down the opportunity to move to Charlton Athletic on loan, but the ex-Chelsea star could see things differently if Nottingham Forest come calling before the close of the loan window.

SWP previously thrived under Forest manager Stuart Pearce during his early years with Manchester City and with the club currently top of the Championship and chasing a Premier League return, Wright-Phillips could prove to be a major asset to their promotion push.

New York Red Bulls @ 4/1

The current favourites to land the out-of-favour QPR midfielder, the lure of moving to New York coupled with the chance to reconnect with his brother Bradley would undoubtedly make any kind of deal a tempting prospect for the player.

Those behind the scenes at the Red Bulls could also favour a move and the chance to recruit a player with major honours to his name from stints with Chelsea and Manchester City. If Jermain Defoe and Nigel Reo-Coker canthrive there, Wright-Phillips certainly can!
