Three South Americans that can replace Demichelis at Man City

Published:

Martin Demichelis has certainly enjoyed an upturn in fortunes over the past 12 months, after adapting to life at Manchester City and forcing his way into Argentina’s World Cup plans, and if the defender has his way his tenure at the Etihad could well be extended.

“I would be happy to stay this year and then one more year because I think I will still have the quality to play at this level,” he said in an interview with the Manchester Evening News.

The comments could not be better timed for the 32-year-old, coming in the wake of his game-saving equaliser against Arsenal at the Emirates but should City be looking at alternatives to the former Bayern Munich man?

Here are three South American options for the Citizens to consider

Eder Balanta – River Plate

The 21-year-old looks to be on the cusp of big things, having excelled for Argentine giants River Plate over the past three years.

Part of the Colombia squad that reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Brazil, Balanta is all set to become a mainstay of the Cafeteros team for years to come and could be available for as little as £4.3m, with Liverpool among those previously linked to the defender.

Mateo Mussachio – Villarreal

Manuel Pellegrini’s contacts at former club Villarreal may have already moved to draw the Chilean’s attention to the 24-year-old Mussachio, who has won plaudits for a series of fine displays in La Liga that have highlighted the £17m-rated stopper’s ability to sniff out a dangerous pass and produce a well-timed tackled when required.

The Argentine already turned down the chance to move to the Premier League with Tottenham, but it could be a different story if a bid from Champions League chasers City comes in.

Marquinhos – Paris Saint-Germain

Linked with moves to both Manchester United and Manchester City over the past 12 months and still only 20 years old, it would take a substantial bid to prise the Brazilian way from PSG, with the Parisiens previously shelling out €31.4m to land the defender from AS Roma, but it could prove to be well worth it.

Recalled to the Brazil national team under new manager Dunga, the Selecao could really have done with Marquinhos’ coolness and composure during that 7-1 loss. A must-buy for City.
