Rugby League: Catalan cut again for maiden Super League triumph
Published:As if stopping Leeds from becoming only the third club to complete a Super League/Challenge Cup double wasn’t enough for Catalan Dragons, the Perpignan-based Rugby League outfit are now just 10/1 to win this year’s Grand Final after edging past Huddersfield.
Bernard Guasch’s men, who joined Super League less than a decade ago, made it into the play-off semi-finals for the first time since 2009 thanks to an 18-16 win over the Giants, who were half their opponents’ price to take the title this term prior to kick off.
Dragons were slashed from 18/1 to lift the trophy, which would be the French club’s first major honour in its 14-year history, although the toughest tests still lie ahead.
The bizarre format of Super League’s play-offs, which involve higher-ranked teams receiving more than one chance to progress, settles down after the last round of preliminary semi-finals, with the forthcoming qualifying semi-finals representing a more conventional last-four system.
Wigan Warriors, the 5/6 outright favourites, are hotly fancied to see off north-west rivals Warrington Wolves in a repeat of last season’s Grand Final, which the former won.
They’re 4/9 to beat Tony Smith’s side at the DW Stadium, as they did 24-20 earlier this month at the same venue after coming back from 14 points down.
Catalan are again unfancied at 5/2 to beat St Helens, who are one of two clubs, alongside hated rivals Wigan, to have pulled off the double that cruelly evaded Leeds this term.
The Saints are 2/7 for a semi-final victory at their Langtree Park home, and 11/4 to win the Grand Final for the first time since 2006, but there’s no better Super League story developing than the one coming from the Franco-Spanish border.
