Revealed: The World Cup star close to Man City and Man Utd

The hero for Argentina in their semi-final penalty shoot-out win over Holland, Sergio Romero looked set for a reunion of sorts with Louis van Gaal, it’s been revealed, after Manchester United launched a late bid for the goalkeeper.

But the Red Devils were reportedly not alone in their admiration of the South American, with Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini also thought to be keen on a move for the player.

According to Italian news source Tuttomercatoweb, Romero even went as far as negotiating personal terms with the Citizens, only to see the deal fall flat after the club failed to meet his wage demands.

The Argentine was keen on a move away from Serie A, having lost his place in the first-team at current club Sampdoria.

Like City, Van Gaal was willing to offer Romero an escape from his Italian anguish, but once again the deal hit a road block when it came to the goalkeeper’s wage demands.

United were ultimately unwilling to meet his wage requests, in part due to the fact he would be operating as an understudy to current number one Davide De Gea.

Negotiations with the Old Trafford giants reportedly continued throughout today, though in the end an agreement could not be reached.

Romero is now set to remain at Sampdoria, following the close of the Italian transfer window.

The Argentine spent last season on loan at AS Monaco, though the principality club ultimately opted against a deal for the star.

Romero will now look to complete a move away from the club in the January transfer window, though if he is keen on either Manchester City or Manchester United , a change in approach could well be required.
