Prepare for more Man City quadruple talk after cup showing

Published:

Last season there was a repeated question posed to Manchester City. Can they be the first team to win a quadruple?

After they took the Capital One Cup extremely seriously to claim a 3-1 win over Sunderland in the final, Ladbrokes received a flurry of money as it looked increasingly likely that Manuel Pellegrini’s side could achieve the unthinkable.

This season, that storyline will get a lot of airtime again.

Pellegrini took a refreshingly alien standpoint in the League Cup, fielding a host of first-teamers in their clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

A 7-0 second half thumping followed, but left the defending champions sat second, behind Chelsea, in the outright market for the competition at odds of 3/1.

That price is likely down to the fourth-round draw, which pitted Jose Mourinho’s side against Football League Shrewsbury, while City were handed a home tie against Newcastle.

There shouldn’t be any fear of the Magpies causing an upset though. For one, they have lost all of the last 11 games they’ve played against the current Premier League champions and, for two; Pellegrini is quite clearly loathed to weaken his side, no matter the competition.

With more talk of a quadruple looming, it makes sense to highlight the massive odds still available on the feat at such an early stage of the season.

Ladbrokes are offering 500/1 that City defend both their Capital One Cup and Premier League crowns this year, with the added haul of the Champions League and FA Cup thrown in.

Considering how close they came last year and how small those odds became, it makes perfect sense to jump on the bandwagon and find a comfy seat before it becomes roof-rack-room only.
