Premier League bargains: Sakho signing tops our 5 cheap picks

Ask most football fans who of the summer arrivals has made the biggest impression on them, and a big chunk of them will have undoubtedly said Diego Costa.

However at a cost of £32m, he is far from cheap, and with hamstring problems persisting, it looks only a matter of time before a spell on the sidelines is enforced on the Spaniard.

So six games in to the Premier League season, we give you our five best bits of business done in the window when it comes to value for money.

5. Gylfi Sigurdsson – Tottenham to Swansea – Swap deal with Michel Vorm for Ben Davies

It’s hard to put a figure about how much Swansea ‘paid’ to bring the Icelandic international back to the Liberty Stadium, but it probably won’t amount to any more than £8m.

As the Swans find themselves lacking the creative player ‘in the hole’ with Michu moving to Napoli, Sigurdsson’s return could be just what they need.

Having netted seven times in 19 games in his first spell at the club, he has got straight back to business this season, with one goal, but more impressively, four assists to his name in the league already this campaign.

4. Martin Kelly – Liverpool to Crystal Palace – £1.5m

Considering he was a part of the England squad at Euro 2012, such a small fee just two years later looks an absolute steal for the 24-year-old.

He has impressed so far with his desire to get forward and create chances matched by his ability to track back and put in important tackles.

The receipt of the Man of the Match award in Palace’s game against Everton may be the first of many he receives if continuing his current form.

3. Mohamed Diame – West Ham to Hull City – £4.4m

Cynics will question why, for all their interest, Diame’s move to Arsenal last season failed to come to fruition, despite a well publicised release clause in his contract.

But a switch to Hull has so far brought out the best in the Senegalese midfielder. Two great goals in his opening trio of appearances will leave the Tigers fans hoping for more from the number 17.

His inconsistency infuriated certain sections of the West Ham fans but he has shown no signs of that since his move to Yorkshire.

2. Graziano Pelle – Feyenood to Southampton – £8m

Ronald Koeman has worked wonders to keep his Southampton side competitive following their well documented exits over the summer, and it is in some way thanks to the acquisition of this Italian.

With a contender for goal of the season at the weekend taking his tally up to four from six, the striker has had an outstanding September, with three goals, an assist, and a Man of the Match award all going his way.

£8m may not seem like ‘bargain material’, but with Championship sides splashing out £11m on strikers and Manchester United chucking £75m and £35m cheques about, he looks a great bit of business.

1. Diafra Sakho – Metz to West Ham – £3.5m

Having netted 20 times in 34 games in the 2013/14 season, the signing of Sakho may not have seemed like a risk, that is had he not joined the Premier League from the French second division.

But the Senegalese frontman has hit the ground running netting four goals in his first four starts in all competitions for the Hammers.

A partnership with Enner Valencia looks to be bearing fruit for the east London side, with the pair’s movement causing havoc for visiting defences.

And at 24-years-old, there could be more improvement to come from the striker.
