US Open women’s final best bets: Serena to be taken distance

Published:

Serena Williams will walk out onto Arthur Ashe court as the big favourite to win the US Open for a record-equalling sixth time in the Open Era, but the form book suggests she’ll be made to work exceptionally hard by former world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Below we offer up our carefully selected best bets for this heavyweight contest:

Caroline Wozniacki to win the first set @ 5/2

Serena may not have dropped a set en-route to this year’s final but she hasn’t come up against anyone in the sort of hard-court from her Danish opponent is in yet.

Wozniacki has won every one of her six first sets heading to the finale and although she has twice lost to Serena during the current hard-court season, she’s taken the opener on both occasions.

Serena Williams to win 2-1 @ 10/3

You don’t hunt down record-equalling Grand Slam tallies if you give up at the first set back however and time and time again the younger Williams finds the reserves to claw her way back to victory.

As mentioned above, Serena’s already completed a pair of comeback wins over Woz this summer and even if the she is pegged back from a set in front on the night, the American can claim it in three.

Her last two US Open victories arrived by the same score.

Exactly three sets @ 9/4

At odds-against this arguably rates as one of the premier bets for the contest, should the 7/2 outsider cause an upset.

If Wozniacki can find a way past her more powerful opponent for only the second time in 10 carrer meetings it feels unlikely to be in straight sets.
