Newcastle transfer watch: Ben Arfa and Yanga-Mbiwa head out

Published:

Newcastle United look resigned to endure a frustrating final 24 hours in the transfer market after failing in their attempts to bring a new striker to the club.

Loic Remy has already turned down an improved offer from the Magpies in favour of joining Chelsea, while Lyon have now  told the club that star striker Alexandre Lacazette is not for sale.

The 23-year-old, who scored 22 goals in all competitions last term, had been linked with a blockbuster move to St James’ Park, with Alan Pardew keen to bolster the club’s attacking options.

But Lyon have so far refused to discuss any potential deal, leaving Newcastle facing a race against time to bring in an alternative forward target.

Two players that look to be heading out of the club, meanwhile, are Hatem Ben Arfa and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

Ben Arfa has previously been linked with a move to Besiktas in Turkey, while Birmingham City have also emerged as surprise contenders to recruit the France international, with the player expected to leave Newcastle in the next 24 hours.

Yanga-Mbiwa, meanwhile, looks to be heading to Serie A, with AS Roma reportedly lining up a bid for the France international.

Giallorossi manager Rudi Garcia is thought to be a keen admirer of the defender’s talents, have watched him play at Montpellier, during his stint in charge of fellow Ligue 1 side Lille.

Though Yanga-Mbiwa’s wages have proven a stumbling block to previous deals, it is thought that the chance to play for the Rome side under Garcia could convince the 25-year-old to lower his wage demands.

That departure could yet pave the way for Newcastle to recruit Virgil van Dijk, with the Celtic defender keen to depart Parkhead in the next 24 hours, though they could face competition from Southampton for the Dutchman.
