What’s the matter with…Luton’s slow start to League Two life

Luton’s first season back in the Football League since 2008/09 was fancied to be a successful one, with the Hatters placed towards the top end of the League Two betting prior to the campaign’s kick-off.

While John Still successfully managed the side to a win on the opening day of the season, joy hasn’t been too forthcoming for the Kenilworth Road club, who have since gone winless in all competitions and are lengthy 20/1 shots to claim the Football League’s third tier.

So what exactly is the problem with Luton? Is it a case of an overhyped club failing to deliver on expectations or is this just a blip in what is a marathon campaign?

What is obvious is that the club are still adjusting to the departure of last season’s hot-shot striker, Andre Gray, who bagged 30 goals in the Conference to help seal the title, before moving to Brentford this summer.

The hole Gray left is clear to see, Luton have scored just five goals across their seven matches so far, with the gaggle of front men tasked with replacing Gray’s goals managing just one strike between them.

However, Still clearly has faith in the men at his disposal having decided against bringing in any striking cavalry on transfer deadline day.

Both Paul Benson and Mark Cullen were at the club last term and combined for 28 goals between them in all competitions.

With the Hatters midfield providing the goals so far in 2014/15, the return to form of both those strikers will see a sharp improvement in Luton’s results.

The 4/1 on the club getting promoted is still a viable betting option, especially if the attractive football Still’s men are playing can start producing goals.

What’s more, the club are used to rallying after a slow start. Eight games into their Conference campaign last term they had only managed two wins. So all is not yet lost.
