Where Man United should spend Neville’s mooted £100m next

Published:

With Manchester United’s defence putting up as much resistance as a colander does to water when shipping five at Leicester, Phil Neville is the latest high-profile name to have thrown his opinion into the ever-expanding ring.

The part-time pundit has stated that his former club are still around £100m in spending shy ‘before they can even think about winning the title.’

Neville unsurprisingly cited a defensive midfielder and a central defender as priorities, with United deemed 16/1 shots for the title under Louis van Gaal after picking up just five points from as many games.

But if such a fortune was made available so soon after the club’s £150m summer spree, on who should such a war chest be spent?

Central Defender – Miranda

The elder of Atletico’s vaunted centre-back pairing at 30, the Brazilian has earned a wealth of experience for the Spanish champions and unlike defensive partner Diego Godin has made noises about leaving the Vicente Calderon before now.

United sorely need leaders at the back, not more young talent, so a seasoned performer of Miranda’s class could be just the ticket for Van Gaal.

Central Defender – Ron Vlaar

‘Concrete Ron’s’ World Cup heroics for Holland outlined the Aston Villa skipper could offer similar marshalling expertise to a defence in serious need of guidance.

The obvious advantage of having plied his trade in the Premier League for the past two seasons, is accompanied by his favourable relationship with LVG.

Defensive Midfielder – Morgan Schneiderlin

A defensive midfielder who even scores goals now, the Frenchman may have publically performed a U-turn on his stance at Southampton after seeking pastures new, but there’s only so long the Saints will keep hold of him.

Schneiderlin has proved he is a real force in the Premier League and his head could easily be turned again in January to add some more substance to United’s wobbly central midfield area.
