International Accumulator: England and Ireland backed

Published:

The Premier League campaign may only be two weeks old but the spectacle /nonsense that is the international break is already among us.

Love or loathe the interruption to the domestic calendar international friendlies do serve a purpose – even if it’s just another excuse to place an accumulator.

Friendly matches are often difficult to predict but whether it’s building on a strong World Cup or rebuilding after a poor one each of the teams in our fourfold have something to prove.

Backing England, Ireland and USA to win and Argentina to avoid defeat against Germany looks the way to go and at 19/1 is definitely worth a punt.

England to beat Norway @ 1/2

With Wayne Rooney making his bow as Three Lions captain the 4/1 on the Manchester United man to open the scoring is a temptation, as is a Rooney wincast at 7/4.

However, Daniel Sturridge remains the main goal threat and as such we’re simply opting for an England win here.

Germany are the only European winners at Wembley over the past 17 games and a Norway side that drew 0-0 with the UAE last time out and has won just three times in 15 matches should pose little threat.

USA to beat Czech Republic @ 11/4

The Czechs may have won the two most recent clashes with USA by an aggregate score of 7-2 but the last game was four years ago and much has changed.

While the Republic failed to qualify for the World Cup, America lit it up with a string of gutsy performances.

The hosts have not won a match since November 2013, while Jurgen Klinsmann’s side have lost just four of their last 24 outings – winning 17 games in that time – and look poised for success here.

Argentina or draw v Germany @ 9/10

The World Cup final showed just how close this game could be and near identical records of one normal time loss in 28 (Germany) and one normal time loss in 26 (Argentina) highlight why.

It is tempting to side with the World Cup winners at home but history suggests otherwise.

In the six meetings between these two prior to the final only the away side has emerged victorious.

Germany won just one of those games and with La Albiceleste taking two and the three remaining games ending all square this is a double chance that could prove fruitful once more.

Ireland (-1) to beat Oman @ 9/10

Every now and then you have to ignore the form book and this match is one such fixture.

The Republic have won just two of their last 13 games – losing seven times in the sequence – while Oman are unbeaten in their last eight.

However, the level of opposition the visitors face on a regular basis skews these stats and the 4-1 scoreline produced when these two last met in 2012 is a better indicator of what could happen.
