Horschel can scoop mega pay-day with Tour Championship win

There isn’t just the small matter of an $8 million purse up for grabs at the Tour Championship, but also the incredibly generous $10 million prize for landing the FedEx Cup, as the 2014 PGA Tour draws to a conclusion.

29 players have the chance of walking away from East Lake Golf Club like that guy who’s just saved tons of money on his car insurance, but realistically only a handful of men should dare to dream.

After the third round of the FedEx Cup playoffs at the BMW Championship five men – Chris Kirk, Billy Horschel, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy and Hunter Mahan – can land the Cup if they win the Tour Championship.

Of that quintet there’s only one man’s form worth following.

20/1-shot Billy Horschel has located his A-game at just about the perfect time of the season, finishing tied-second at the Deutsche Bank Championship two weeks ago before following up with the BMW Championship crown last time out.

Last season’s FedEx final was Horschel’s debut and saw the 27-year-old turn in an impressive tied-seventh finish, showing that he’s got course form to go with his current fine fettle.

Two vital statistics for success at the Atlanta course are greens in regulation and strokes gained putting. Henrik Stenson won the tournament last year having been in the top two of both and the fact Horschel comes here having achieved the same feat at the BMW bodes exceedingly well.

Another player enjoying a hot-run, both in results and with the flat blade, is Rickie Fowler (14/1). He needs a whole set of permeations to fall into place to win the FedEx Cup but is likely to figure at the business end of the leaderboard.

The season’s perennial bridesmaid, Fowler completed his seventh top-10 finish in his last eight starts at the BMW and has risen 100 spots in the putting rankings in that time.
