Hamilton makes a creditable fav for Italian Grand Prix pole

Published:

After the debacle which was the Belgian Grand Prix for Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will resume their version of the show “Wacky Races” in Monza as they first gun for the advantage of pole position.

As has so often been the case this season it’s the Brit who is the favourite to be leading the way as the lights turn green in Italy.

Hamilton is 4/6 to record the fastest lap in Q3, while Rosberg – widely cast as the villain of the piece in Spa – is an 11/8 shot to record his fifth straight pole position and seventh of the season all told.

Given the aforementioned stats alone, turning punters away from Rosberg at odds against would not be done lightly.

However, other than last season when neither Mercedes man covered themselves in anything resembling glory in qualifying, it’s Hamilton who has pedigree at Monza to exact some revenge.

Rosberg may have qualified 6th to his teammate’s disappointing 12th in 2013, but previous to that Hamilton has literally lapped up the snug surroundings of Monza, where he’s poled twice in the last five years.

The Stevenage native also claimed a place on the front row in 2011 and went on to record the fastest lap in the race last year despite not making the podium.

With vengeance clearly on his mind for the seemingly dastardly actions of his opposite number in Spa, Hamilton will be more focused than a Navy Seal on a rescue mission at Monza to gain that pole position.

Outside of the Mercedes pair, even the advent of changeable weather for the last qualifying session may not be enough to break-up the duopoly such has been their dominance on race weekends.
