Free-agent Spurs target must choose between London or Benfica

For footballers in gainful employment, the fear of getting sold by their owners is over for six months. However, for those contemplating a trip to the Job Centre, there’s still hope they could get snapped up.

While the transfer window is now firmly locked until January, free agents can still be signed by clubs in need of bolstering their squad and in the Premier League it seems Tottenham are one such team.

Having missed out on the capture of Danny Welbeck on deadline day, Spurs are reportedly still keen to add to their striking stocks, with Brazilian Jonas top of their list of targets.

The 30-year-old is currently without a club following his surprise release from Valencia this summer and has a number of suitors sniffing around the possibility of snapping him up.

Having been a Los Che player since January 2011 the decision to release the striker, who scored at least 10 La Liga goals for the club in his last three seasons there, was born out of the Spanish side’s money-woes rather than the player’s lack of form.

As a result the Sao Paulo native has a couple of UEFA-involved clubs to choose from as Benfica look to trump Spurs’ set of Europa League cards with a Champions League emblazoned set of their own.

If Tottenham, who are 21/20 favourites to beat Sunderland when Premier League action returns, have any reservations over signing Jonas, then the record of their last Valencia-bought striker likely plays a big part.

Roberto Soldado has notched just six Premier League goals in 29 appearances since arriving at White Hart Lane from the Mestalla, but could arguably be coaxed back into his best form if played alongside his former strike partner.

The pair scored a combined 64 league goals in the two full seasons they played together at Valencia, with Soldado bagging 41 of them.
