Donaldson heads our trio of 3/1 shots for ISPS Handa Wales Open

Guessing the eventual winner of a golf tournament can often prove a tricky business, so ahead of the European Tour’s last event before the Ryder Cup, the Wales Open, we search for value in the top five, top 10 and top 20 markets instead.

If however we were pressed to pick a winner from the 2014 edition of the annual Celtic Manor-hosted event, joint 14/1 favourite Joost Luiten fits that bill.

The Dutchman is striking the ball beautifully right now, posting a pair of top fives en-route to play the 2010 Ryder Cup venue’s famous layout, which he clearly relishes given Luiten’s tied for fourth and then second at the Wales Open in consecutive years.

Next up in the top five department we’re going with one of the three-strong Ryder Cup contingent looking to hone their skills ahead of one of the greatest team pursuits in sport.

It’s native Welshman Jamie Donaldson at 3/1 who gets the nod over Lee Westwood or Stephen Gallacher and not just because he’ll enjoy the home crowd’s support, but because his last two finishes read 1,7.

In the top 10 market meanwhile, the prices clearly get squeezed but there is plenty of value to be had and not least on last year’s winner Gregory Bourdy, also at 3/1.

The Frenchman’s affinity with Celtic Manor is obvious as before taking the title he’d posted a 14th and two other top 10s, one a runner-up spot in 2011, within the last four renewals.

Last but not least is Danish player and three-time Tour winner Soren Kjeldsen who rates another promising 3/1 shot to finish in the first 20 places.

Aside from his impressive display in Wales last year, Kjeldsen has turned in a tied 15th and third position in four starts ahead of this event.
