DJ Campbell primed for goals on Maidenhead debut

DJ Campbell has joined Conference South side Maidenhead United in a bid to resurrect his career and Ladbrokes has priced the 32-year-old up to shine on his debut.

Campbell, who can list Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Millwall among his career clubs, has signed up to play for the sixth-tier side after being released by Blackburn this summer.

United manager Johnson ‘Drax’ Hippolyte, who is Godfather to one of Campbell’s children, revealed that the player had been training with the club to maintain his fitness and signed on to play after being left unattached for the start of the season.

Hippolyte has such confidence in Campbell’s abilities that he believes he will be able to call on his services for only a short time before another professional club snaps him up.

“I can’t believe someone in the Championship hasn’t given him a chance. He’s still quality,” he told the Maidenhead Advertiser.

“You watch him train and finish and he should still be in the Championship or higher. He’s still a young man and a great player. He’s not seeing his career out, he’s in his prime.”

Campbell is expected to make his debut in the FA Cup this weekend against Ryman Division One outfit Faversham and Ladbrokes believes the striker’s quality will shine through.

The bookmaker has made Campbell an even money shot to score at anytime, while those backing him to score first can get tempting odds of 7/2.

Maidenhead are odds on to beat a team two divisions lower but can be backed at a hugely-tempting 6/4 in the Wincast market when coupled with an anytime Campbell goal.

The standout selection though, given that this is a proven professional talent we’re talking about, is the 16/1 that says Campbell will mark his first match for the Berkshire club with a hat-trick.
