Deadline Day: Man United set for second Monaco Swoop

Published:

Manchester United’s deadline day swoop on Monaco could end up being of the double variety after reports linked the Old Trafford club with Joao Moutinho.

United are already on the brink of signing Radamel Falcao on loan from the principality club but the latest news suggests the Red Devils and La Liga outfit Valencia are battling to sign the 27-year-old Portugal ace.

The key that could work in United’s favour is that Moutinho, like Falcao, is represented by football ‘super agent’ Jorge Mendes.

The agent has had plenty of dealings with the Old Trafford club in the past having had a hand in the transfers of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson.

United are expected to secure the signatures of Falcao and Ajax defender Daley Blind before the close of business but speculation is still rife surrounding both Moutinho and AC Milan’s Nigel de Jong.

United are said to have ruled out a move for Arturo Vidal over concerns about the Chilean’s knee injury and this has paved the way for Moutinho.

Mendes appears to be going all out to secure his clients moves away from Monaco so it would not be a huge surprise to see the former Sporting Lisbon and Porto ace join Falcao in the north-west.

Moutinho managed just one goal from his 37 Monaco games but with eight assists looks to be the sort of player who can both break up play and launch attacks.

After signing Falcao and Angel Di Maria United’s priority remains defensive reinforcement but if Moutinho is available at a reasonable price his capture would further please United fans.

The Red Devils’ title odds have already been cut to 16/1 and could tumble further still with each new arrival on transfer deadline day.
